Korean American mezzo-soprano Ha Young Synn is a rising operatic artist who earned her Master of Music degree from the Manhattan School of Music in 2023 and her Bachelor of Music degree from Syracuse University in 2017. She is the recipient of the Janet D. Schenck Award from the Manhattan School of Music, recognizing distinguished contributions to the life of the School, as well as the Irene L. Crooker Award from Syracuse University for excellence in music.

Ms. Synn has trained extensively in summer opera programs, including SongFest at the Colburn School of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles (2015), Si Parla, Si Canta in Urbania, Italy (2016), and Musiktheater Bavaria in Bavaria, Germany (2017).

In August 2025, Ms. Synn made her Walt Disney Concert Hall debut as the mezzo-soprano soloist in the world premiere of Let My People Go, a choral epic composed by Nackkum Synn. She portrayed Yu Gwan-sun, a Korean independence activist from South Chungcheong Province, in the March 1st Movement, commemorating resistance against Japanese colonial rule.

 

In March 2024, Ms. Synn won the third-place scholarship award at the National Association of Negro Musicians (NANM) Local Branch Competition, presented by the David I. Martin Music Guild in New York City. She previously made her debut at Weill Recital Hall at Carnegie Hall in September 2019 with Angel Vocal Art.

Recent off-Broadway musical theater highlights include: Surpanaka in Rimli Roy’s Ramaavan, A Musical (an Indian epic). Recent operatic highlights include: Nada in the Serbian Acapella Chamber Opera, Svadba by Ana Sokolović, Jean (Understudy) in Le portrait de Manon, and Dorothée in Massenet’s Cendrillon in Manhattan School of Music’s Graduate Opera Theater. Scene work includes Jonathan Dove’s Flight (Stewardess), Idomeneo (Idamante), Der Rosenkavalier (Octavian), and Così fan tutte (Dorabella), Die Fledermaus (Orlovsky,understudy), Oberon (Fatime), Carmen (Carmen), and Lakmé (Mallika).

Originally from Los Angeles, Ms. Synn resides in New York City and studies with Matthew Anchel. She works as a full-time staff member in the Student Affairs department at the Manhattan School of Music and volunteers as a bassist in the English ministry at IN2 church. When not performing, Ms. Synn enjoys Latin and ballroom dancing, photography, playing guitar, and expanding her piano skills.
